“I Want to Quit Smoking”: Here’s How

Stop Smoking

These Tips Will Pull You From Addiction

Quitting smoking is by many accounts the hardest thing that a person can do. However, those who successfully quit often state that it is the most rewarding thing they have ever done. I don’t need to go into boring stats that you’ve heard a thousand times—you already know that smoking is bad for you. So what’s something about tobacco that you didn’t know? How about that it’s a poisonous plant. Fact: in order for the tobacco plant to protect itself from bugs it secretes nicotine to ward them off. You wouldn’t smoke poison oak would you? Ok. Maybe that’s not exactly a fair comparison, but you get what I’m trying to say.

I’m willing to bet real money that most smokers wish they weren’t smokers. If you’re trying to quit smoking, understand that it will be one of the most difficult things you will ever do in your life; but remember, nothing that is extremely rewarding is ever easy. If you’re serious about quitting, follow these tips and you will be well on your way to a smoke-free life. Continue reading

Laptops vs. Tablets: Which is King?

Do you remember what happened on April 3rd, 2010? No one famous died. No international wars broke out. What then? It’s the day Apple released the iPad. As with all new Apple releases, the iPad tablet was largely hyped. Many market analysts predicted it would turn into the next iPod in that it would completely re-write the way that popular gadgets are used. In terms of short-term sales, the iPad has met that anticipation with success, selling 28.73 million of the $500+/each devices. Since then, it has spawned dozens of imitators, the most notable being the Samsung Galaxy Tablet. Apple, along with other tablet-producing companies, want you to believe that tablet devices are the way of the future and that laptops are out. But take a step back and think: what is so good about tablet devices? Why are consumers flocking to buy these pricey machines? Are they better than Laptops? In short: internet browsing, they’re cool, no. Let me explain. Continue reading

What is Labor Day?

Labor Day picture

Happy Labor Day!

If you are reading this at work today chances are you aren’t working in the United States. Today the U.S. is celebrating its annual tribute to workers—Labor Day. Lets sit back, relax, and answer the question: what exactly is Labor Day (other than a day off)?

Labor day began on Sept. 5th 1882 in NYC by the central labor union, the first major trade union in the country.  It quickly gained a word of mouth following and in a short 2 years was recognized by the government as an annual tribute to American workers.

Labor day is often celebrated with parades intended to demonstrate the strength and spirit of American workers. It is also a public display of unity and ability to aim toward goals ass a group.

Labor day also represents the end of summer and the beginning of school for most college students, as many Colleges and Universities begin classes on the Tuesday after Labor Day. That means “Labor Day” to more than a few undergrads means “hangover day”.

Happy Labor Day America!

Beware of Dog Sign: featured Sign of the Week

Watch for Dogs

You can customize virtually any sign to match your taste

When I was a kid my first job was a paper route. I was 13 years old, in middle school, and waking up at 4 A.M. every morning simply to deliver the news. The gig was a tough one. Turns out, winter mornings in Wisconsin are pretty darn chilly. Though I left that job behind a decade ago, I still remember a very certain house towards the end of the route. Why? Because of the dog that lived there. Don’t get me wrong—the dog was rarely outside when I showed up with my newspaper, he was inside, and yet, he could somehow sense me approaching. And smell my fear. When I neared the porch to drop the paper off, I could hear him scuffling near the door and growling from under it. Though clearly overtly aggressive, there was no “Beware of Dog” sign in sight. I knew the dog would be there every day and I was still scared. Can you imagine how nervous random passerby might be when they walked by that house during the day? And still—no beware of dog sign.

Look folks, dogs are amazing pets. I don’t have to list the reasons for that. But some dogs are simply more aggressive than other others. In most cases a simple “Beware of Dog” sign goes a very, very long way. It allows random passerby and unfortunate paperboys a warning about your loving, if aggressive, friend; and (our signs) look great in the process.

A Wedding Sign: Something That Lasts

Wedding Plaque with Birds

Celebrate Your Loved Ones Marriage With a Custom Wedding Plaque

Do you know what I’m getting tired of? I’m getting tired of the pessimistic attitude that people have towards marriages. Tell me if you’ve heard either of these cynical standards: “They will never last,” or “Half of all marriages end in divorce.” The next time you hear one of those go ahead and defenestrate the offending party. If they get mad, blame me.

Seriously though, why would anybody look at marriage through that lens? Why not choose to view marriage as a unity of love, or realize that half of marriages don’t end in divorce. You know what that means, right?

Here at Atlas Signs and Plaques we believe in things that last, just like your loved ones marriage.
