The 10 Greatest Inventions of All Time!

The First Car

The First Automobile Ever

Good inventions are a dime a dozen: the iPod, beer, whiskey, Camaros, cameras, etc. Sadly, most great inventions are taken for granted, which in a way is a testament to the quality of said invention. Things like bookstores, guns, complex music and cell phones would not be as developed as they are today had not someone first invented their primitive versions. This top 10 list is of the greatest inventions of all time. Continue reading

How to Make a Sign pt. II

Last week we showed you how we convert HDU board into signs. After Chuck completes his part, the plaques receive the mounting system specified by the customer. The signs are then sent to our spray department where Janey gives them their real metal coating using a high volume low-pressure spray gun.

Janey Giving HDU the Real Metal Coat

The metal coating is not paint, it is a patented cold sprayable metallizing process comprised of up to 75% real metal. The real metal heats slightly as it forms a chemical bond with the surface, which means that the metal essentially becomes part of the HDU. Unlike paint, which forms a mechanical bond with its substrate, the metal coat will not fade, peel, or flake a few years down the road.

This is the last step in our creation process that the signs will be collectively monochromatic as a batch. This means that soon they will receive their patina finish, and each sign will look unique and lustrous.

But for now the metal on the signs needs time to cure, or adapt to its new home on the HDU board.

Once the metal is cured to satisfaction, the signs receive their patinas. This is where the real fun begins.

What is Objectivism? Finding Happiness

Atlas Objectist

Atlas Has Grown Into the Symbol of Objectivism

Have you ever sat down and thought about what the meaning of your life is? Go ahead; take a minute to come up with your answer. If you said to serve God, then you’re probably a Christian. If you said to reach enlightenment then you’re definitely a Buddhist. If you said to lead a happy and fulfilling life then not only are you wise, but an objectivist.

What is objectivism? Objectivism is the idea that man is an end in himself, not the means to the ends of others. The pursuit of his own rational self-interest and his own happiness is the highest moral purpose of his life. In short, according to objectivism—it is your personal responsibility to make yourself happy in life. Naturally, there is a subjective cloud hanging over any given human’s definition of personal happiness. That’s why objectivists believe in an objective set of morals, universally true for all mankind. This ethic is to have full, rational respect for others’ rights. In essence, this means that each individual must have respect for each other while going about their own path to happiness. Continue reading

Please Remove Shoes Sign, A Great Holiday Gift!

Please remove shoes

The Perfect Seasonal Gift!

I hate to say it, but winter is coming. There’s no doubt about that. I can already sense the bleakness as it slowly forms in my mind. I can feel the ubiquitous cold-blanket sucking the life out of everything it touches like a dementor sucking the souls from it’s helpless victims. I can see the vastness of snow covering the entire ground save for a few intrepid blades of grass here and there resembling the look of an old man’s very-nearly-bald head. It’s some depressing business.

What depresses me more during winter is when someone walks through my house without removing their shoes. Delivery boys do this sort of thing all the time. Sound familiar? I hope not, but if it does then we have the answer for you at Atlas Signs and Plaques. This featured sign is in the mold of a snow-capped mountain, with the clear and easy to read “Please Remove Shoes” superimposed on it. The perfect gift for the holiday season, this sign will prevent people from tracking garbage through your house with their wet shoes. Imagine what a please remove shoes sign will do in the summer too. Rain. Mud. Grass. Dirt. You don’t need any of that on your carpet. (Note: the snow on the mountains is permanent, regardless of temperature.)

Sometimes people are rude, it happens. Sometimes people are unintentionally rude, it also happens. In either case, if people enter your house with their shoes on with one of these plaques hanging right in front of their face, then they should go back to grammar school and re-learn English so that they may get a better grasp of how to read.

“I Want to Quit Smoking”: Here’s How

Stop Smoking

These Tips Will Pull You From Addiction

Quitting smoking is by many accounts the hardest thing that a person can do. However, those who successfully quit often state that it is the most rewarding thing they have ever done. I don’t need to go into boring stats that you’ve heard a thousand times—you already know that smoking is bad for you. So what’s something about tobacco that you didn’t know? How about that it’s a poisonous plant. Fact: in order for the tobacco plant to protect itself from bugs it secretes nicotine to ward them off. You wouldn’t smoke poison oak would you? Ok. Maybe that’s not exactly a fair comparison, but you get what I’m trying to say.

I’m willing to bet real money that most smokers wish they weren’t smokers. If you’re trying to quit smoking, understand that it will be one of the most difficult things you will ever do in your life; but remember, nothing that is extremely rewarding is ever easy. If you’re serious about quitting, follow these tips and you will be well on your way to a smoke-free life. Continue reading
